Making people and ideas findable
Wow, a long time climbing the corporate ladder...but I did get the payoff. I now have some financial freedom from years of hard work to now start my own business... but wait... a music industry business? What am I thinking, musicians and venues are flakier than corporate america.
The difference is in the "fun" factor. I can chose how to do this with keeping my values and fun, and not have to sign up for the hassle and friction that comes with being enslaved to a job. There is still plenty of slavery to creating a band, but the buck stops here and if I don't like it... I have the full freedom to change it.
So I have started the music career, have a business plan, have goals, have started networking in the Indy and Chicago music scene and am making great progress for the time at bat. In two months I have made over $2,000 (that is a lot in musican bucks) and played over 15 gigs (for you keeping track, the $$ per hour of pay is really funny compared to my previous career). Remember, it is about living the life of a musician not about the money.
My corporate experience is coming in real handy in marketing the band, networking the industry, and finding new opportunities. I have a real adjustment though in the financial budget... I am used to million dollar budgets and it is hard to not keep spending money like I am still in corporate america. So for now, I am just another broke musician starting a band on a shoe string budget, playing a lot of gigs to pay for gas, food, and guitar strings.
Visit the jazz band web site at www.cocktailsax.com ... and if you need to hire a band for a corporate event, give me a call...
