Making people and ideas findable

Jim Rohn, self-made millionaire and successful author, said "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with". Brian Tracy once said that: "you cannot scratch with the turkeys and fly with eagles"; you cannot relate with mediocre, uninspired and unfocused people and expect yourself to be different from them.

You need to surround yourself with people who empower you, compliment your areas of expertise, and fill in the gaps you are missing. Those who can help you step outside your comfort zone to accomplish the goals you set out, and can keep you accountable for actually doing what you say you are going to do.

You will be inspired by them and receive resources from them. Joining or creating accountability, mastermind, or a coaching group is a great way to surround yourself with like-minded, driven, successful people that will propel you to higher level of success.

Who is holding you accountable? Who helps you be more creative? Who inspires you? With all of the bad news about the economy, downsizing, market crashing and so on it is more important than ever that you take steps to learn something new, find an accountability program that you can implement, and surround yourself with successful people who are on the same path as you.

Wow, I never thought about the 5 people I spend the most time with being my average. Now I have to start thinking about who those 5 people are, and whether I want to spend most of my time with them.

Conversely, am I one of their 5 people, or are they looking to replace me now?

Lindsay, I have learned over the years that it is important to surround yourself with very positive people. I avoid judgmental people who tear down others, and I avoid people who have a negative view on life. I find that they suck the life energy from me. I have had a spiritual coach, a business coach, a board of advisors, mentors and others who have been there to guide encourage and help me.

Today I have unfollowed several people on Twitter because of the horrid things they have posted about our new president. While I am happy to have people in my life who DISAGREE with me (its how I learn), I will not let people in my life who belittle, tear down or make others wrong in order to build themselves up.

I strongly believe that "You are the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with" I pay careful attention to who surrounds me and I am glad to hear that you do the same.

Hazel, I agree completely. I find that the people I need in my life are people that inspire me. I remember being at a party over the summer, and there was this guy there and he kept looking around and saying how he didn't belong there. I didn't get it. He was kind of right, but that's because of his mindset. I have to be around people that I look up to and want to make proud. Does that make sense? That has to be my need for approval coming out, I don't know...Have you ever taken Purpose Track? It's Paul Lushin's thing that he does...I'm sure you have. Anyway, I just started it this week. And I think it's brilliant, especially since I am writing a book. One thing he said yesterday is "we become what we believe." (I got really excited for a minute because I keep saying I am going to be sitting on Oprah's couch in the next couple of years because she'll have my book in her 'book of the month' club.) I seriously, as corny as it sounds, totally believe this. I am blessed to be surrounded by brilliant people... people who encourage and push me to be better and to fulfill my dreams. I am also extremely obsessive and driven for some reason. I think it takes a little healthy obsession to get you going.
