Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Not sure the best person to direct this question to so I figured I'd throw it out there for everyone to see. Does anyone know of a way to turn off notifications of new members into the group you're a member? I don't want to turn off all e-mail notifications for the group, I just don't need to know every time someone new joins do I?

Erik what email program are your rules being used in?

Unfortunately, the email notifications are just an all or none. I can turn off ALL group notifications, but I can't specify the "joined" messages. So I took my own advice and created a mail filter. It's working great so far.

I did check and there was nothing at a network level that allows you to turn off that setting - seems to be a member preference.

You can modify your email notifications in your settings.

Good idea Erik. Thanks for the suggestion.

While I don't think there's a way to turn off the new group member notifications, the administrator can turn off specific notifications that appear on the front activity page, like when two people become friends, when someone updates their profile questions or photo, or when they post a comment, discussion question, or blog post.

I'm hoping there's something in that section of Ning that lets administrators turn that off as well.

The one thing I can suggest is that you put a double filter on your email. I send all Smaller Indiana messages to a special folder. I'm thinking about adding another filter that deletes all messages that contain "has joined the group" in the body. That would save all the other messages.

Theresia I ONLY want to unsubscribe from the new member email notifications. I'm like you, if I don't get emails, I'm bad about staying current on what's going on in the group.

That's what I was afraid of... =(

There should be a button on the main group page that if you click on it, you can either follow or stop following the group. You'll just have to remember to check in from time to time, which I'm bad about. But I know what you mean. We get enough emails as it is, eh?!
