Making people and ideas findable

Okay, I accepted at a very early age that I was destined to be a character actor. I accepted the fact that my hair was receding, my features were getting more rounded (I prefer to think of this as filling out a bit), and I accepted the fact that I would have to wait to "get older" to play the roles that I was born to play. All this! I accepted all this, because I knew that is where my niche' would be as I pursued my humble little career. However, I never really ever felt like a character man. In other words, I never really felt (dare, I say) "old." Never, that is, until today.

Today was a beautiful, sun filled Saturday afternoon here in Indianapolis. The temperature was way above normal at 70 degrees. A perfect day to get some work done around the house and in the yard. First, I took the liberty of sleeping in a bit, and after a great night's sleep I awoke with a zest for life. I dressed myself for a day of chores and headed out to get a little bite to eat. I needed the fuel that would motor me through my power yard day. I wanted something quick and cheap, so my truck found it's way to "Ci Ci's Pizza." A very cheap pizza buffet chain. The employees are always very friendly. And when I say very I should really say, VERY. "HELLO, WELCOME TO CI CI'S." As I was paying for my pizza buffet (includes a modest salad bar, various kinds of pizza, dessert pizza, and for a little extra change, a self serve soda) the "chipper" young lady behind the counter asks me, "Excuse me sir, but are you a senior." "Wha...," I said. I literally looked over my shoulder to see if there was some old guy hovering (which I hate) behind me. But no, just me. I turned back to her and sarcastically chuckled and said, "No, I am not a senior." Surely to God she was joking. Maybe she was flirting? But the follow up point to her original question quite simply took me a back. Very earnestly smiling at me, she tilted her round little head to one side and said, "Because, you know if you are it would be $1.99 off." Seriously?

Oh my God! Seriously? She was seriously asking me if I was a senior? I can tell you, that pizza tasted like crap-o-la! I came home, most definitely nonplused, and set to my chores. The echo of her now shrill little voice ringing in my ears. The image of her now enormously round little head now cocked to one side, with that big now big toothed smile asking me, "Excuse me sir, but are you senior?" constantly replaying in my head. It took me all afternoon to get the leaves up out of the backyard. With each bag I filled, the more my back began to ache. And there are still more to fall. The job will have to be done again, and perhaps again. And now, thanks to that sweet, "kids say the darndest things" Ci Ci's girl, I feel incredibly old! For the record, I am not yet a senior! I was born in 1967, you do the math! Not even close! But I am thinking about trying to get my senior discount the next time I visit Ci Ci's Pizza.

Best Line: "And now, thanks to that sweet, "kids say the darndest things" Ci Ci's girl, I feel incredibly old" I laughed throughout this entire post. Thank you Eddie. And shame on that girl.
