Going "green" (even a small attempt) takes patience

We got rid of our water softener and brine tank for about 4 months now. In its place we got an electronic water conditioner that measures 8.5” X 6” and it's wall mountable close to the the water source. It comes with a coil to be wrapped around the pipe where we get our water supply. It is said to be a “green” alternative for hard water treatment; helps saves energy and improve water heater efficiency and can remove mineral buildup without salt or other chemicals. The system induces different electric and magnetic fields at different frequencies to treat the water as it passes through the pipe and results in the minerals crystallizing before they become ions and stick to the pipe wall. Simple enough…but…

We saved space without the 2 tanks, do not buy salt anymore, do not hear the softener going in the middle of the night but can’t say we’ve noticed any major changes with the “softening” of the water and it has not improved soap lathering. I still see white mineral stains occasionally on my glassware. Maybe I should just be patient and wait and see when the 6th month comes around, although they say after installation to wait 30-90days for all old hard scale layers to disappear.

Thanks Elaine. I'll wait and see what my device does for me and like I said, perhaps post again in Dec.

We found a few references to it in forums on the Internet and then my husband got the same info from a couple of plumbers...unsolicited.

Elaine - I sure hope I see the effects before the year is up! When you say "we discovered the magnetic field....site", do you mean you found this flaw out via a study done on it, or from your own or someone's experience?

Maybe I'll post again on this in the month of Dec...just to follow up..should there be (or not) any significant change.

Now Faith, don't be spending all your time staring at the pipe!! Seriously, though, the information did say it would take a while - maybe a couple of years.

Elaine - Thank you for the info! I will be looking at the pipe closely now since you mention the possibility of a leak.

I don't want to add salt to the wound, but there is an issue you need to be aware of with those units.

My husband and I looked into this type of unit recently. What changed our mind about using it over the traditional or expensive filtration systems is the evidence we discovered that the magnetic field eventually caused the copper pipe the coil wrapped to "disintegrate" and begin leaking at that site.

We really liked the idea of tankless, no salt softeners and supposedly they work well, but that leak issue was the deal-breaker. I hope it works better for you after the break-in period and that you don't ever have a leak. But it is better to know to watch and be prepared than have an unexpected problem.

Well, it's left to be seen..I hope (with time! LOL) it works since we already sunk some money into the device.

Sounds like perhaps they are hoping you will forget or loose interest after a while? Seems to me that the water would either be soft as soon as it passes by if it works as adverstised. If working, why the the stains, low suds, etc when running through a traditional softner works instantly?
