Making people and ideas findable

I'm at the beginning of a transition from a casual, if not reluctant cell phone user to a smartphone evangelist. Maybe. Most of my cell phone use to date has been the kind where I check the time or wait for it to ring so I can talk to my wife. I don't use it to surf for information or check email, but I do text Twitter from time to time. That will change this week with the arrival of a new Android G1 with a T-Mobile data plan, courtesy Hanapin Marketing as incentive to help them explore the ins and outs of mobile web design.

As part of my journey, I'm interested to learn how you use your cell phone. (Is there anyone who doesn't have one these days?) What functions are vital to your work or personal routines? Which features are you intimidated to use? Do you have any regrets? How does this little device fit into the ecology of all the other devices you have in your life?

There are two ways you can help me understand what I'm getting into:

1) Comment here, or on my blog. Share your own experience adopting and integrating a cell phone into your day-to-day routine.

2) Complete this survey and pass the link along. I kept it simple. It shouldn't take more than a couple minutes of your time. I want to get a better understanding of which applications Hoosiers use on their phones, and whether anyone surfs the mobile web.

I would be particularly interested to hear about the experiences of anyone who has recently purchased an Android G1.

I used to be a big PDA user, but then I started telecommuting, rendering it useless. Everything I needed was on my desktop. This was pre-wireless, so I never got a real feel for mobility.

I wonder why I hadn't really seen myself using the Android like I used my PDA? I don't use the iPod for anything but music, and only while waiting for or on the bus, but your comment made me think a bit more of this new phone being used for calendar stuff. I wonder if I'll remember what I'm missing or if I won't use those tools on this new phone, either.

I had a Blackberry at my last job. And while I miss the ease of use, and having all my information at my fingertips (thumbtips?), I've managed to find a workaround. For one thing, my iPod will hold all my data, I keep my personal cell phone with me at all times, and I never have to respond to emails within minutes.

Still, I'd love an iPhone. . .

Kevin, I completed your survey, however I just wanted to add a quick note. Right, wrong, or indifferent - I have become SO dependent on my Blackberry that on two separate occasions it has died and it really created an obstacle I had forgotten how to overcome. You are officially moving into the dark side ;). Your life will never be the same...
