Making people and ideas findable

Colin Clark

I'm confused... How am I supposed to use Social Media to make more money?

Is social media just a shiny new toy? What is all the hype about? When is it going to go away? I want to grow my business using the most cutting edge marketing tactics, is social media for real? It seems like there are thousands of 'social media experts' out there, who do I trust?

I'm going to go ahead and throw something out there... There are no social media experts out there... at all. There are only a lot of people scrambling to understand what's going to happen in the next few years. Is social media marketing for real? Yes... definitely. The key is establishing systems that work, believing the advice you get from people you trust, and ignoring the people you don't.

Let's go back to the question... How am I supposed to use Social Media to make more money? Let me answer that question with another question... How do you use a telephone to make money? How do you use a traditional website to make money? How do you use networking events to make money?

Social media is not particularly new, but it's just now going mainstream and becoming a viable communication medium. If you really want to understand it, think about other communication mediums and how they work. It's all people connecting with people.

Colin, I haven't read Groundswell, but Forrester Research is a great organization.

Nicely said Colin. I try to use my social media strategies as just that, Strategies! To get business you need to create building blocks and social media is just one part of the foundation. In itself, it may be useless but as part of several other blocks it can be quite effective and yes, maybe ultimately a $!

Thanks for the comments guys.
@David - Definitely not rocket science. Very similar to existing tools. The only difference is velocity.

@Michael - I've not heard of that book. I'll have to check it out. Have you read Groundswell? The folks at Forrester Research put it out a few years ago and it was a total paradigm shift for me.

@Kevin - Social Media is EXACTLY like Rainmakers. I know people who go for months, never get any business, and then quit. People do the same thing with social media. The key with any marketing strategy is to carefully measure what you're getting out of it to justify spending your time there.

Colin, very well said in a brief post. Social Media is a tool, just like networking. I often hear at Rainmakers, not a slam on them in particular, that networking is the way to avoid cold calling. I dont' agree. It is another tool in my marketing toolbox. I need to use networking, social media, advertising, and good old fashioned prospecting in an intertwined way.

I acquired a book for New Riders you might find interesting. It's by Joel Postman and is called SocialCorp: Social Media Goes Corporate.

See, this comment is an example of how you make money with social media :)

Very well stated. You make some great points. Social media is not rocket science and you're correct with how you answered questions with good questions. It's the newness that has people stirring, not the medium necessarily. There are "rules" and protocol one should follow, but you should have some level of success after you have that down.

Your message was simple and true - perfect!
