I was lucky enough to score two free tickets to the Phantom of the Opera performed by the Indiana Ballet Company, thanks to Smaller Indiana. My husband Dan and I went last night to the show and were very impressed. I hadn't been to a ballet in several years, and the Phantom of the Opera is one of Dan's favorite narratives. It was also the first time either of us had been to the Madame Walker Theatre - what a beautiful venue (have you seen the funky monkeys above the stage!?). The performance was definitely a great way to spend our Halloween evening!
We really enjoyed the IBC's modern twist on the story - never thought I would see professional ballet dancers perform to the music of Apocalyptica! I was also impressed with the IBC's approach to ballet in Indiana, which was explained to the audience by the executive director and artistic director just before the performance. The company really seems to be purposeful in their strategy, and I certainly hope they're able to succeed in this market- it would be awful to see the company succumb to the same fate as Ballet Internationale. But it seems that the company is encouraging the dancers to integrate into the city, as all the dancers live here year-round and are active in the community. IBC also seems to be in touch with its audience and wants to make the ballet accessible and appealing to Hoosiers- tickets are priced right, the atmosphere isn't stuffy- you can drink wine and eat snacks while watching them perform and mid-performance "bravos" and applause is encouraged. I enjoyed last night's performance more than any other ballet performance I've ever been to and while I know absolutely nothing about ballet (or dance in general!), I think it's safe for me to say that most open-minded Hoosiers would enjoy themselves at an IBC performance.
I can't wait to go back, and am planning to take my 8 & 10 year old cousins to see the December 12 performance of the Nutcracker... the IBC is even hosting a Russian tea party before the performance!
