Making people and ideas findable

"DEVELOP THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESS" - 'To get rich and stay that way, develop the following characteristics: a positive attitude, integrity, ....."

So what do you think are the rest of the characteristics of success? Ya know, I bet some people will think this sounds so superficial but I have come to realize it's true. So here goes. How many times have we all heard that you must dress for success? If I have heard it once I have heard it a thousand times. Now I actually believe it. With my roots as an artsy type, singer songwriter etc I have often gone for the comfort of jeans and t shirts when off to the studio, the grocery, or around town errands. I have also thought that if someone was looking at my clothes and make-up (or lack there of) to see who I really am or what I am really capable of then I didn't want to do business with them anyway. Right? Have you ever heard yourself think that?

We have all run into someone once in our life that looked incredible and carried themselves like a winner only to find that the pretty package was kinda empty inside. I wonder why, in the past, I have felt that inner substance came in mocassins, gauze skirts, long ponytailed hair and yin yang bumper stickers. Ya know - the tree hugger type. (Allow me to be clear - I like the tree huggin' types, the skirts, etc and inside I am one of them. I have just decided to be less obvious in my appearance. A closet tree hugger you might say.) Here is what I have found: when you walk into the meeting looking like a fashionable business woman, clothes, well styled hair, professional make-up, etc people are listening differently when you tell them it's about the trees. I don't know why, it doesn't really matter- it just is.

So here is what I think: Dress for success AND be the person of inner substance. I think that might be a characteristic of success. What are your thoughts? Characteristics of success?

Bingo, Deanna. You hit the nail right on the nose with this post. As an image consultant, I routinely educate clients regarding the absolute necessity looking their best in their clothing, grooming, and body language. The way we present ourselves is a deal breaker or maker, unfortunately. We are biologically programmed to be attracted to healthy, good looking people. It all boils down to breeding ability, biologically speaking. To ensure the survival of the species, we are wired to desire to breed with those who appear vigorous and capable of birthing and providing for offspring. I have been studying this a lot lately, and it is so interesting how all this operates. Check out books by Kevin Hogan for further info. He is a fascinating dude.

One of the things I always tell my interns during orientation is that, yes, people DO judge you by your appearance. That's life. Whenever I took a test in college, I always dressed up. I went to school all prefessional because I felt that if I looked my best, I would do my best, and 97% of the time, I would get an A. (I studied, so it wasn't just about dressing, but you get my point).

I've met the best kept/dressed people as well, and a few I am thinking of right now, I feel very sorry for because there is absolutely no inner substance. I feel like you do, look it, and be it on the inside. Qualities would also be giving, listening, and determination. I mean, we fail. We will fail getting there. It's all about what you do after you fall. You know? :-)
