Our Strengths in a Word Cloud

This word cloud represents the strengths of about 80 Smoosiers.

Today, I discovered Wordle, an online resource that will create a "word cloud" -- or a graphical representation of word frequency -- based on whatever text you enter. I've been playing around with this on my own blog but wanted to see what it might look like with other collections of text.

So I took four SI Membership Directory pages (sort of at random -- I took #1, #27, #57, and #114) and copied/pasted the members' responses to the "What is your greatest strength?" profile question. The above is the word cloud that got generated -- words that appear bigger in the cloud (like "creativity," "communication," "people," and "ideas") were offered more frequently than words that appear smaller.

Does this way of looking at our data give you any insights?

I love the visual representation. I would call that art! What a fabulous tool, thank you for introducing it.

Before I visit the site and become addicted, how much does it cost?

Outstanding! This is fantastic and I think it's nice to see the reflection of what we hope being a Smoosier is all about!

I plugged the first four chapters of my novel into it. Dude was by far the biggest word on there. I hope that's not a sign of the quality of the work (To be fair, "Dude" is the nickname of three former frat boys who started a moving company, Three Dudes and a Big Box Van.)

Amy: It's free -- AND addictive. But with great power comes great responsibility! Use wisely.

Doug: I cross-posted this into a discussion and posed the question: are there certain things we HOPE pop up when we conduct an exercise of this nature? That is, are there certain traits we want to see, or others that we'd prefer to avoid? The big ones now (creativity, communication, ideas) seem to be in line with SI's vision and mission...

Eric: Dude! I'm not sure that's a problem...until we get to the point where the word "Dude" is the biggest in the SI Strengths word cloud! :)
