I'm Sick of Being a Patient: (see 1 and 4 below)

Does anyone know of a doctor practicing in Indianapolis that actually cares about his or her patients? If so, please give me the name...we need some help...

My wife, Amy, rarely complains, but yesterday she called me just to vent. She had taken our 6-month-old son, Malachy, to the doctor for a check up. Amy had made this appointment weeks ago..arranged a sitter to watch our other 4 kids. She drove 30 minutes to get to the office...She showed up on time...and was kept waiting 2 hours before she got to see the doctor.

On her way out she noticed a sign on the reception desk say, "If you're more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, you'll be charged and you'll need to reschedule".

Are you kidding me?

What does this sign say about how the doctor values the patient's time? Why do we accept this treatment?

Oddly enough Amy was expecting to have to wait. The last time she brought all the kids and ended up waiting 90 minutes. So this time she got a sitter so she didn't have to endure the marathon wait with bored and restless kids. She's enduring this because she likes the doctor. He's nice and isn't militant about following western medical rules at all costs. But he also seems oblivious to the experience his patients are having in his waiting room. (Aside from the long waits, his staff isn't very warm...but they're probably bitter because they deal with inconvenienced patients all day long).

Yes, there are more efficient medical operations that get you in and out faster...so called "family" practices...which in our experience operate more like factories than caregiving institutions...we gave up on those places because they are not sympathetic to our leaning toward holistic and preventive medical practices. If you question the value of immunization shots, they threaten to drop you.

Why can't doctors be more like midwives? The midwife comes to the house for every appt during pregnancy...we even had our last two babies at home...a beautiful experience...and the midwife is a fraction of the cost of having a baby in the hospital...

And while I'm on this rant, let me bring up insurance. Amy and our kids all get regular chirpractic treatment. There's nothing wrong with their backs. They go in order to stay healthy. And it works. But recently I started my own biz, and in the process of applying for healthcare, we check "yes" for receiving regular chiropractic care - thinking the powers that be would rate us an even lower risk. We have no health issues. We don't drink or smoke. We exercise regularly. We eat a very healthy diet. But because we get chirpractic adjustments, we were moved to a higer risk category...which will cost us an additional $1,400 per year for coverage.

I could go on and on...but it won't do any good. Some people on SI might read this and sympathize, but nobody in leadership and certainly no one at the insurance companies will do anything to change the system to correct these injustices...will they?

Once again I'm reminded of a movie quote - this from "Liar Liar" captures the essence of being a patient, or a customer of the governement:

Fletcher: You scratched my car!
Motorpool Guy: Where?
Fletcher: [indicating with his hands] Right there!
Motorpool Guy: OH... That was already there.
Fletcher: You - -LIAR! You know what I am going to do about this?
Motorpool Guy: what?
Fletcher: Nothing! Because if I take it to small claims court, it will just drain 8 hours out of my life and you probably won't show up and even if I got the judgment you'd just stiff me anyway; so what I am going to do is piss and moan like an impotent jerk, and then bend over and take it up the tailpipe!
Motorpool Guy: [tossing the keys to Fletcher] You've been here before haven't ya?

Ahh, you have hit a nerve with me!!! This happens to me everytime I go. Current record; 90 minutes in waiting room (that why they call it waiting room) and 90 minutes in the 'butcher paper' room.
It has become such a painful expierence that I usually let the issues pile up so I can get them all solved at once. (can't be good for me) Of course, this backfired. I went to the demartoligist with a typed list of 5 issues. After waiting 45 minutes the doctor came in. I gave here the list. She paused and said, "Which ones of these issues is the most important to you?, I only have time to treat 1 of these today. You'll have to schedule a another appointment to address the other issues." What the h3ll is that? Service?
Now that I have ranted a bit... I've tried to look at this from the doctors side. Big medical education bills, rules galore from insurance companies, high malpractice insurance cost, etc. It's enough to suck the passion out of anyone. I can see how they see the only way out is to create this ultimate efficient machine that maximizes the financial return of their time and methods around what is paid for and how.
My family and I are currently on vacation and on the 12 hour car ride this came up. A few things were discussed.
Remember when . . . they had company doctors/clinics? Doctor fees where simple? (you paid for their time, not your symptom) Clinics served communities and not networks?
What happened to sucess thru merit? Who is the better doctor; the one who sees the most patients or the one who impacts the quality of life of more patients?
Would you waive your right to sue if you could pay less? Could you use that savings to pick the doctor that provides the best service? Something about this sounds familiar, put my money where it fits my needs the most and provides me with the most value. The American way?

Ok, two things. For pediatrics, Dr. Alan Schwartz. He's incredibly kind and patient, always takes extra time playing with my son and talking to him (and to me) and we always get in on time. If I show up early, I sometimes even get in early. His staff is friendly and very understanding. 879-9777.

And just because you sound like you could use this from time to time, Dr. Timothy Walbridge, a.k.a. Dr. Housecall. He practices Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, and ONLY does housecalls. He comes in a high tech van with lots of equipment, treats you on the spot, bills your insurance, refers you to additional services if he can't provide them at your house, will send his records to your regular physician and keep them informed of your treatment. 645-6303. He's fairly new to town, with a new practice and his wife is an OB/GYN.

I have been in the medical field for 20+ years in the billing, coding, auditing, training field to help both medical clients and patients also. I recently perform a medical mystery shopping. The office I am going to suggest has a fabulous physician (& they are working to improve front office staff). This physician is Dr. Gerald Mick, St. Vincent Health Primary Care Network, in Carmel. It takes a very lot to impress me after working in this field for so many years. I gave him a 9 out of a 10 scale on the evaluation. He might be someone to try.
