Making people and ideas findable

Over the 4th of July weekend, I took my niece to NYC for her 16th birthday. Now, we've been planning this trip for a while, and she really wanted to see the Yankees play the Red Sox in Yankee stadium before they tear it down at the end of the season. Let me say right up front that I'm not a baseball fan. I've always found the game to be about as exciting as watching golf or paint dry. I know, I know, people always tell me that it's better if you are at the game, but I've been to games before and been equally bored out of my mind. My problem is that I can never follow the action on the field. Thus, I get lost, lose interest, and don't enjoy the experience.

On a rainy afternoon on the 5th of July, that all changed. I enjoyed the game. I had a blast. I was able to see everything that was going on and to follow the action. Why the sudden change? I doubt seriously that it is because I've suddenly become a big Yankees fan. The difference seems to be in where I was sitting. The only tickets I was able to get for the Big Game with my niece were bleacher seats. I was worried that we'd have a terrible time as these where the cheapest seats in the house (but still $100+ each). When I've been to both Major and Minor League games in the past, I've always sat along the first base line. In the bleacher seats in Yankee Stadium we had a direct line of sight view across second base, the pitchers' mound, and into the catcher's glove. From this perspective I was able to follow every pitch, keep my eye on every ball hit and thrown, and consequently, follow the action. It is amazing how enjoyable the game can be when one can follow the plays! I am seriously tempted now to see about buying tickets in similar seats at an Indian's game just to test my theory. Who knows, I might become a fan of America's Pasttime yet!

That is a great perspective! I am glad to see someone enjoying the game! Im more along your past standing on baseball but I never miss a Colts game. I had a similar outting to a game on the 50 yard line just about 20 rows up behind the Colts bench! Since I have been to numerous games some even closer to the action but those seats were what HOOKED me into being a fan for life! I still think the better view of the real action is at home on HDTV. But when the game is for the playoffs there is the energy of the crowd when everyone is just into it that you will never experience sitting on your recliner at home! thanks for the post! Chris Reed

Nice to hear you had a great time, James. You know, sometimes, it's not even about what's going on on the field but who is sitting around you. If you get a few knowledgeable fans who know both the game and the teams involved, it can be a great experience. If you think the bleachers at Yankee Stadium were fun, you should try Cubs vs. Cardinals in the bleachers in Wrigley Field.

I might just do that. I need to plan a trip to Chicago soon to go to The Merchandise Mart. Maybe I can make it a "double header"!

James - You brought a tear to my eye. I've been a lifelong baseball fan. I learned the game from a friend who taught me to follow the game from the catcher's perspective. Honestly, as the catcher, the game moves so quickly (I know that's hard for some folks to believe) he doesn't have time to review every possible senario that could happen next between pitches. Its HIS job to call the game and determine which pitch the batter will least likely expect. Since I learned how to watch a baseball game as if I were catching it, I've been hooked. I'm jealous of your Yankee Stadium experience since I'll not make it to NY for a game before the old girl comes down, but I'm glad you and your niece had such an opportunity. I'm looking forward to my trip to Comiskey Park in Chicago next month for a White Sox v. Red Sox battle. Both teams should be in first place. I wish it was tomorrow! If you're ever up for an Indy Indians game, give me a call. I love to watch a game w/ someone whos not just there to "people watch".

May we sit in the bleachers? Otherwise, I'm afraid I'd be bored. :-)

done. I'll get the first round.

James... If you had a microscope and looked at my DNA, you would see tiny Cubs Logo's imprinted at the end of each strand of protein combinations. I LOVE BASEBALL... Little do people know that I pitched a shutout in the state tourney over 14 yrs ago and batted 16 for 18 in the State Tourney. I played CF, SS, and Pitcher and led my league in stolen bases since I was 4 years old. Since all of that action... I have a hard time "sitting" and watching a game that I am not playing in... But I loved your BLOG. Oh how I miss the days of Mark Grace and Andre Dawson Sluggin Homers over that Ivy Wall.
