Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

On August 17th, 2008 (Sunday) at approximately 2130 hours, I consumed beer. Yes, it was on a Sunday and went against all values that Indiana law intended not to happen.

Why does business such as alcohol sales on Sunday have to be regulated by state government? What role does this play into our lives and how does it help? If you want alcohol on Sunday, you will go get it no matter what. You will either buy it on Saturday or you will go to a friends house to enjoy the distilled spirits. The bars that serve food can sell it, why not the grocery store?

From an aspect of business itself, shouldn't the liquor store be open when they want and decide what best hours benefits them? Why does government need to decide what is best for alcohol sales? Doesn't this just create a windfall of revenue for bars that serve food during Colts games compared to the liquor store?

Just an issue I never understood with this state since I moved here from Ohio many of years ago.

Ditto. Never understood it. Used to live in the chicago land area until I was 13. Then we moved down here. Up there I was even able to accompany my parents into the liquor store.....truly I am amazed I'm not an alchohalic just from that :) The gov. needs to stop trying to protect us from ourselves and focus on what they are really supposed to be doing in their jobs.

My family lived in such a small town, that when the Uncles were together playing cards, they would write out a note and send all of us kids to the store to get the beer. The extra money was used to buy Cow Tails candy and Snicker Bars. The store owner would watch us carry it back down the block to make sure we got back alright.

It was not uncommon to see 10+ of us nieces and nephews running back down the street with 12 packs of beer and candy hanging out of our mouths.

Now our family members would be placed in jail and the kids taken by Child Protective Services.

Just be glad we're not in Kentucky. They still have completely dry counties, no matter what day of the week.

It comes down to business. I recall, as a kid, going to restaurants with my father on Sundays b/c they were allowed to serve beer after noon. I have no idea if that's still true, but if it is, I gotta think there would be a good battle between restauranteurs and those who want to do away with the law. If liquor could be sold at retailers on Sundays, it would put a hefty dent in the eateries' take.

I have never quite understood the law but never thought it was all that bad. It gave me a reason to talk to my neighbors if we ran out or had a cookout. Sometimes, if it was their beer, they got invited. Reason enough to prevent beer sales on Sunday in my opinion.

But if you would legalize selling cars on Sunday and drinking alcohol that may be a real contradiction?

I was raised in South Carolina - the Bible Belt. We have Blue Laws (as they're called) because folks should be in church praisin' the Lord and visitin' with kin and friendly folk. That's why there aren't liquor sales on Sunday! What's Indiana's excuse? I can only imagine the same but I'm sure everyone has figured out a way to Praise the Lord on Sunday and still visit with kin and friendly folk over a nice cold refreshing adult beverage! And something tells me that even God wouldn't mind - as long as we went to church first! :-)
Andrew Ball Comment by Andrew Ball on August 18, 2008 at 5:59pm
Well Dang Theresia! Now what about us non-Christian folk who do our praisin' on Saturday? Seems like we should be unfair to everyone and limit sales to Monday through Friday exceptin fer Wednesday night when some other folk do some of their praisin' that night.
