Making people and ideas findable

As a security professional, I'm always on the lookout for the newest trends. What are the burglars doing? Knowing that typically gives me some insight as to where my business will be. Kind of a "glass is half empty" way to look at things, I suppose, but that's the business I have chosen.

It seems that the increased number of foreclosures has had a direct effect on crime. According the the August 19 issue of The Indianapolis Star, "areas with the most foreclosures also have the highest crime rates."

Many banks and mortgage companies which own these properties do little to make them lived in. Lawns go unmowed or aren't mowed enough. Windows may be boarded up.

But why would crime rates rise? First, unoccupied houses can themselves be targets for burglars looking for scrap metal, especially copper which they can pull from wiring, plumbing, A/C, and appliances.

Additionally, let's say your home is on a cul de sac. You have a neighbor to the right, but to the left is a vacant house. A burglar could enter your home from that side of the house in full knowledge that he would be more likely to avoid detection. Essentially, a vacant home gives a burglar more opportunity.

What should you do? First, find out who the realtor or title holder is. Insist that they maintain the house to make it lived in: mow the lawn, have the leaves raked, keep the windows unboarded, empty the mail box of junk mail, etc.

Second, and more specific to you, invest in protecting your own home. Use doors with deadbolts and either heavy wood or metal door frames. Make sure all your windows lock properly. If you have a Home Security Alarm, use it. Make sure your window decals and your yard sign are both visible and in relatively new condition.

Have a system but don't know how to use it? Check with the installing company. If you can't do that or you don't have a system and you're interested in having a system installed, shoot me an email.

Nice blog, Rhett. Good common sense.

Question for you: are most burglaries taking place during the day or night? I have heard a lot of burglaries take place during the day, because it's more likely the owners aren't at home. Do you know anything about that?

Here's something interesting I've heard from the Fishers PD related to the housing market. An officer told me that with the increased number of homes for sale, that burglars are going to open houses pretending to be interested in purchasing the home, but really doing recon for their burglary.
On a side note, my neighborhood had some individuals going door to door trying to sell home security systems and attempting to gain access inside to "inspect" the access ways and such. We found out that the company doesn't sell or install on my side of town.

Brian,
Beware of the door to door guys. The vast majority of them are college age kids who work for a company out of Utah. Why Utah? Because corporately speaking it's the Cayman Islands of the mainland US. Their typical pitch is that the system is free but the city requires you to pay a fee for monitoring. This is patently false. They also typically represent themselves as GE - this may or may NOT be true. Whatever the case, I am suspicious of any door to door outfit. Why would I tell a stranger that comes to me unsolicited what security arrangements I have made???

Erik,
According to FBI statistics, something like 2/3 of all home invasions/burglaries take place during the daytime/business hours. Why? First, less chance the homeowner will be there. Less chance for confrontation. Less chance someone with a gun comes at you. Plus, if you're caught, it's less time than a robbery charge.

Second, fewer neighbors are home to witness the break in. At high noon, fewer people are out walking the dog because that's when it's hottest. And if they are home, they're not watching your house.

Finally, since fewer are around, most burglars will go right through the front door. A good firm shoulder shove will do the trick with many doors (GET DEADBOLTS!) and the damage is only evident from inside the house.
