Making people and ideas findable

I recently designed some business cards for Cavalier Rodworks, a custom fishing rod company near New Orleans and a client of mine. I wanted to get feedback from fellow Smoosiers. Which designs do you like best and why? (See photo below.)

Bottom Row - Middle
They're all very nice - not sure if I agree with cursive writing on business cards

Hi Alessandra, My eye goes right to 2nd row far right, however, I also like top row far right. I also agree with Andy regarding the cursive writing.

Visually I like the first on in the third row.

For finding it and the info I need off of it qickly in my businesscard binder I would go with the third on in the second row.

Alessandra,

Hey! Great job on these. The concept that makes the most impact, for me, is the first concept in the third row.

I'll tell you why:
The larger than life logo makes a real impression of the brand identity. The eyes instantly connect with it.
The diagonal shift of the contact information creates depth and complexity, which draws interest to the information.

And, as Brian and Andy mentioned, the cursive writing doesn't work here.

Great job! :P

Alessandra,

I agree with the other comments about the cursive writing - the last name is not common - it is better to see it in print to avoid misspellings. I am not sure I understand the logo and what it is trying to convey. At first glance I thought it was a rifle and not a fishing rod. If you had not told me the company and product, I never would have guessed that's what it was. Therefore, I don't like the cards where the logo is more prominently displayed. I like the blue color at the bottom of the business cards because I think it symbolizes water. Could be the analytical person in me, but I prefer the straight lines - the slanted lines and logo appear to be going in too many directions for me to keep up with. The second row - right seems to have too much white space for me and does not help me understand the logo. I really like the bottom row - middle because the name of the company is thing I see next to the logo which immediately tells me it's a fishing rod that I am looking at in the logo. I also like one other subtle feature unique to the card and that is the logo shadowed in the blue space. Subconsciously, it gets me thinking there is something underneath the water - a fish perhaps?

So there you have my vote and reasons why - Bottom Row - Middle

Hope this helps.

Hi Alessandra,

I like the last one, bottom row on the right, and the one in the third row, second from the right. The curved words look like ripples in the water after the fishing line is cast.
Andy Hinton Comment by Andy Hinton on September 30, 2008 at 7:25pm
So there you have it ... it's unanimous - maybe not
I have to agree with Lou about the anything at an angle - for some reason it bothers me - I wouldn't think it would - interested how the others felt
BTW - Totally dig the "periods" as opposed to "dashes" in the phone number - I stopped using dashes over a decade ago after living it Italy and adjusting to European ways. I see more and more people doing it here everyday and I like it.
Again great job - double your fees

Wow, everyone. Such great feedback, thank you! I found it interesting to see how greatly your opinions differed.

FYI: My client has narrowed it down to two cards at this point: 1) 1st row, second from the left 2) Bottom row, right (Katie, DING DING DING, you're the winner!)

I'll probably make a few more mockups of the designs he chose with non-cursive type, per your suggestions.

Lou, good observations about the blue representing water. I hadn't thought of that before, but I suppose it could be seen that way!

Thanks again, everyone!

If I had to choose between the two your client picked, I'd say bottom row, right. No cursive.
Alessandra Souers Comment by Alessandra Souers on October 1, 2008 at 10:39am
Then you are also a winner! He narrowed it down to that one last night.
