Making people and ideas findable

I was home for Thanksgiving and everything was going quite well despite the fact that we had 24 people stuffed into a normal sized home in the burbs and most of them were under 2 feet tall. People were everywhere. Every bedroom was full. People were sleeping on air mattresses in the basement workroom. The kitchen was busy 24/7. You get the picture. But even with all that going on, things were going quite well until someone decided to bring up politics. Now the election has been decided for a few weeks already, but it seems there are still some bitter feelings bubbling under the surface out there. Well, they were under the surface that is, until someone in my family decided to bring it all up again! Anyway, long story short: It all culminated with my own mother asking me who I voted for in front of the entire family. I said, "Do you really want to know mom?" She said, "Of course, why do you think I asked?" So I told her and the next thing I knew, my mom was shaking her finger at me telling me there's no way I could possibly be a "Christian" and have voted that way...Oh boy. Here we go. The first shot heard 'round the world. Ding! The fight is on! The rest of the family joined in and away we went...Well, away they went. Fortunately for me, I've seen all of this before and decided it was time to gather up my part of the family (including the dog) and head off to the in-laws house. I've never been so happy to see my in-laws!

I hate politics. It just always seems to divide people - even family members. It leaves some people disappointed, others disillusioned and still others just wanting to escape it all and head to the in-laws!

I was planning to head home for Christmas...not any more. I think I'll just spend a night or two with the family aorund New Year's and call it a year...

That's a shame. I love politics, I love the rhetoric of it all (on both sides), I like the strategy, the game, the acting, the policy- all of it. I prefer to see it used for the good of most (b/c you'll never do the good of all), rather than personal gain- but anymore, that's tough to find anywhere.

The real shame though- is that people find difficulty in allowing others to have their beliefs and vote their own will without being chastised by others. One of my co-workers is a very conservative Republican, and I am a very liberal Democrat, but she and I can carry on very respectful, informative debates without it breaking down our relationship.

That said, I learned a long time ago not to talk politics with my Dad, it has that same dividing effect.

Wait, your mom questioned your own Christianity? What is it you do for a living again? Does she think you're faking?

I'm sorry that happened to you, Dave. I suspect you're not alone though. And that's really sad. While I don't agree at all with anything of Obama, I can firmly say that no one - NO ONE - has the right to question his faith. And no one has the right to question yours either. And to follow up on Erik's question... I would rephrase to say, "Does SHE know what you do for a living?!" Maybe she needs to be enlightened. Or, maybe just say a prayer and let the Holy Spirit intervene.

That's too bad. It sounds like there was some kind of black sheep/guilt complex happening. My family this Thanksgiving got to talk about post-post-modernism, Marxism/Socialism, fascism, redistribution, banality, angst and lots of other fun topics. My brother-in-law is a sociologist and my dad is a retired pastor.

Curious, did anyone say that Obama was a Muslim?

Of course they did! You mean he isn't? :)

Dave, I feel your pain. I too got the "you're not a Christian" speech from my In-Laws. It really upset my husband and he had to lay down the law - No more talk of Politics! They just can't believe that I am a Christian and I voted for Obama. My brother-in-law will still email me on Facebook with little digs from time to time. He is a Christian radio station manager in Wisconsin . I joke with my husband that he probably has pray requests going out over the air waves for my soul because I voted for Obama!

I'm sorry, I should have said that I was glad that my family got to talk about politics. I didn't mean "got to" in a negative way.
