Making people and ideas findable

Having my own business has been tough but very fun! The toughest part has been unanticipated: the home office days.

I have two school-aged children. When they have the day off or come home from school, they have a hard time comprehending that dad is working. My favorite comment comes from my son: "Dad, you have your own business. You don't have a boss. You are the boss." Oh, if that were only true! I think all business owners (especially service providers) know differently. I have as many bosses as I have clients. And all the bosses have different demands, personalities, challenges, and expectations.

But I wouldn't change this for the corporate life. I already did that and enjoy this grind much, much more.

This is so true, and you have children too! If you have a client based business and self employed you have your hands tied!! But it is much more gratifying working for yourself than in the corporate world, You are in control of your schedule and your income and whatever else comes your way.Keep up the good work!

ahhhh... so glad i've given up the 16 hour day, 7 day a week insanity of working for myself.. i was a tyrant as a boss! There were great moments, and I grew the business successfully, but it really become my task master instead of the other way around.

While I know the drawbacks of the corporate cube world, I have to say I'm really loving being part of a team, and being part of something bigger than I could have been by myself. I'm back to making a difference instead of just making money.... it feels good.

I almost fell over when I read this because I just had one of those "home office days" today. I have two boys (ages 6 and 4) and have always struggled on days they are home with me between getting work done and being a good dad. I try to work in bursts and then come out of my office to play with them for another burst.

It's difficult but I'm with you, I could never go back to the corporate life.

Patric - Good plan. I try to do the same thing. My office has a door. My kids now know to knock before entering. My son is hilarious. He'll ask when I'm taking a break. I'll tell him a time or in a couple of hours. Fifteen minutes later, he's back asking again. But I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm trying to figure out how to do more of my work from my own office. I like having breakfast, lunch, and play breaks with the family.

I'll go you one better. I tell my son to give me five minutes and I'll be out. So he stands outside my office and counts the seconds, "1, 2, 3, 4, 5..."

I work from my home as well, and absolutely understand what you and Patric are talking about! I'm pretty sure that I couldn't go back to corporate America either. Even if I work 20 hours a day; being home every day to get them on and off the bus, and help them with homework, and not having someone other than their Dad and teacher in their lives influencing them on a day-to-day basis (i.e. babysitter), is worth the world to me!

All my kids are grown, so the "stay at home to be with the kids" thing wasn't part of my work life. It became very existential.. i could go days without seeing another human being and I had to wonder philosophically if a tree feel in the neighborhood if it proved I existed... :)
