Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Tiffany Mullen

Please join me on my quest to rid the world of stupid people.

Things I no longer want to hear, EVER.

*May I help you find something? Then, repeated every five minutes by a tiny 20 something year old who appears to only speak those six words before she must giggle inappropriately and has a complete inability to recognize that you are the person she just posed this question to five minutes prior.

*How is everything?" "Can I get you anything?" Along with any other words uttered by waitstaff who think they get tipped based on the amount of words spoken per minute. I want to say "You know, everything would be GREAT if I could get you to quit coming by and harrassing on the status of my wellbeing. If I am NOT fine, I'll let YOU know."

*Any sentence that includes any of the following words: Venti, frappa, mocha, skinny, non-fat, latte, macchiato, chai.....WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO COFFEE?????? And please don't write my friggen name on my cup. I am not five, I am not worried about Bobby or Susie taking a sip from my mine on accident.

The long and the short of it is, I am left to ponder this one question....What happened to people demanding good customer service? All businesses claim to make customer service a priority, but yet....these are the predominant examples in all of our lives. This is one reason why I personally am so anti-chain, anti-big box, anti ANTYHING that doesnt scream "small business" to me. Consumers have become complacent and we simply walk in a daze following whatever big named logo we see off the side of the road. DEMAND good, PERSONAL service, DEMAND that it exists in your company, DO NOT kid yourself into thinking that the SERVICE is what sets you apart from your competitor right now.

Stepping off soap box...NOW.

Hi Tiffany-
many of my rants are on customer service and I too have been very frustrated at the decline of it. see the one under- some feedback, please - and you will see we are not the only ones concerned. The sad thing is you can demand it - but it only works if the person at the other end "gets it", and sees the importance of not just doing their job but excelling at it.

Tiffany-
I completely agree. Therefore whenever I do find myself in a place like S-bucks, I order medium or large or small but never with their terms. And that is rare because their coffee is over brewed and burnt. but that's another rant for another day ($4 for flavored water?!!!???)

You cannot have smart people without stupid people. It's a relative term. We all just have to figure out which team we're on.

Sorry, but service is what sets my company apart from my competitors. I know only because my clients tell me so.

I never go to Starbucks--I don't like coffee, so I wouldn't know much about the experience.

As for customer service, I don't see this going anywhere unless you have more ownership by the employee. How you get that is another issue (money, career length, demographic/cultural change, etc). I have low expectations of anyone that I'm not personally tipping and even then all I ask for is a full glass of water (but then again water is free. . .).

On most days, I'd rather have a $5 herded-through lunch than a nice experience.

ahh...dont take me too seriously. I was just ranting. Someone made me go to Starbucks that day for a one on one and despite my firm boycotting thus far...I submitted. I was SOOO annoyed. :)
Christopher Bluto Comment by Christopher Bluto on March 10, 2008 at 4:06pm
I thought your rant was well executed. We all need to express our little frustrations with the world now and again! Maybe we all oughta just get together for a paintball massacre and let it all out.

The thing about service people is the fact that their insincerity is usually incredibly apparent. If you don't like having a service job... get a different job.
