Did somebody say "Twitter Debate?"

It seems the Presidential candidates are having a Tweet-off.

Thank you, Scott Semester, who alerted us to this story....Read about it here. McCain and Obama are attempting to engage with voters through the microblogging site, Twitter. We wonder what the Hoosier Twittersphere might think?

This is a clever initiative, but Is this the best we can do?

We've been wondering (in this discussion thread) if the candidates for Indiana Governor might join Smaller Indiana to engage in our community and let their hair down a bit...hoping we could get to know the candidates more deeply...and better understand their platforms. We've also been wondering what would be the best way to leverage the Smaller Indiana community to help the candidates connect with us, the Smaller Indiana voters...(join discussion here).

Given the response to these questions, and playing on the creativity of the presidential tweet-off, we'll highlight this discussion one more day...perhaps we can dream up a debate format made just for SI?

And with the muscle that comes from our 2,500 members, maybe we can influence the candidates themselves to chime in and join us. Who's with us? (Share your thoughts here). This could be the start of something good for larger Indiana.

For those of you new to this thread, here's where it all started (see below)

When will race for Governor come to SI?

TV and radio can only offer soundbites. Even newspapers have limited space to capture the nuances of a politician's strategies for service to the people.

Only the interactive Web, with its sound, video, text and photos...with its time-shifting, viral nature can offer politicians such a robust and complete stump upon which to promote a campaign.

And at least for now, SI is the only public media channel through which both parties can promote their candidates - free of charge.

Imagine...a means to communicate what you stand for as a leader without having to raise or spend ANY money to broadcast your message.

So when do you think our candidates will jump into SI? Join the discussion here

Consumption

With our economy in the throes, the green movement growing chic, and theories-galore about healthy diets - it's hard to escape Consumption. Even Wall-E, Pixar's new hit, examines future effects of our consumption through the lens of Buy n' Large. This fictitious store's "lulling calls to consumption help to soften and fatten the human race (you should see these blobs) and separate them from the natural world," says New York Magazine's David Edelstein in his… Continue

Trouble Brewing at the Starbucks “Office”

Is your “chain of offices” closing? Yep, we all do it – use Starbucks locations for business meetings. Employees at 600 company-owned Starbucks stores will need to update their resumes and search for new jobs in the next year due to closings, but Starbucks management isn’t publishing a list of targeted locations. Reports say that 70 percent of the stores being closed were opened after January 1, 2006. There are 110 Starbucks locations between Kokomo and Bloomington with the majority of them be… Continue

Hello Addictive Personality! Nice To Meet You. My SI Addiction.

Hello, my name is Kyle Lacy and I am a SI addict. Something might be wrong with me. I'm sitting here. Right here on my porch. I am tapping away at my laptop while trying to comment on blog postings and enthusiastically welcome new Smoosiers to the wonderful world of SI. In a matter of seconds I realize three things: 1. It is approaching 3 am. 2. My neighbors are still setting off fireworks. I find myself wishing (regretfully, mind you) that they would burn their fingers and stop setting off b… Continue
