Is the economy causing you to change your behavior?

There's a lot of doom and gloom and uncertainty in the air. Is troubling economic news causing you to change your behavior? Whether your an employer, a homeowner, a job seeker...how are these rocky economic times affecting you today...and what do you see ahead for you and your family?

1) - a credit crunch isn't really a good thing, but like a heart attack, maybe it will get people to become more financially healthy.
2) the money you put into a bank or money market which is invested by the bank or brokerage firm is at risk beyond any insurance covering account balances. The ripple effect of some going out of business will affect the average person if money becomes/stays tight (see my response to a prior comment and your #1 above). However, that being said, you are 100% right about not looking at monthly statements and investing for the long term. One thing I never hear about is the effect of the constant flow of money into 401k accounts. Every payday bajillions of dollars flow into 401k's. The mutual funds in their investment choices are required to invest based on their stated investment goals. Unless we stop putting money into 401k's (which would be dumb) there will be money to buy and prop up prices.
3) please please stop telling people to buy now. I want the prices to stay low so I can buy. I'll tell you when you can tell people to start buying.
4) I agree. it will be painful. it won't be pleasant. One of the results of the depression was that people ran their businesses more sanely. The further we get from 1929, the less people remember. Maybe a new generation will learn from this since the current one (which, unfortunately, would be mine) apparently didn't.

No problem with your rant. Somewhere in the past we got the idea that everyone deserved a home, since it was part of the American (material) dream. People should at least put 10-20% down, because if you don't have that money on hand--how are you suppose to fix the house if it breaks?

It upsets me that the media in essence, force people to panic! The bottom line to all this, is to NOT panic, keep your money where it is (don't look at your statements for awhile!!), make sure your debts are paid off if you can, and don't live outside your means, but don't stop living! I'm still driving my gas guzzling Infinity QX56 like a school bus, toting my 3 sons to all of their games, etc....still buying my mocha at Starbucks every morning, but maybe just not spending on other things, just to buy them, because they're on sale, or they're cute, or because I need that 10th pair of black shoes! Don't panic!

Right now, I'm seeing no effect at work, in my business or in my personal life.

I have decided it's probably a good time to think through my experiences in the last (much lighter if the economists are right) recession. What did I do right? What do I wish I would have done? How did business change? What type of work did clients want? What was most profitable? And so on. Since I don't have a crystal ball, this historical information can help inform the decisions I make in the coming months.

I also called my 81 year old father and asked him if he's okay and made sure his savings are in "safe" places. He worked very hard all his life from the time he turned 17 until he 70. He lived well within his means and put away what he could. I don't want to see what he has left get swept away by the greed and indiscretion of others.

Yes. I stopped tipping which immediately added 20% back to my bottom line!

That's hilarious--although I thought you weren't joking at first.
