I wish external links on Smaller Indiana would open in a new tab in my browser

Is anyone else on Smaller Indiana experiencing this? Whenever someone puts a link in any forum or blog post and I click on it, my browser redirects to the link in the same tab in my browser. The problem is that when I am done reviewing the externally linked site, by force of habit I close the tab. Two seconds later I realize I just lost my place in Smaller Indiana because I closed the tab rather than hitting the back button in my browser.

Is there a configurable Ning setting that makes sure that all links in forum or blog posts open in a new tab instead of the same tab? For the techies out there, I'm asking for the target="_blank" setting on the links.

Am I the only one frustrated by this or am I just being overly picky?

Since I am a tad bit of a "techie", I get frustrated as well. Sounds like it's a Ning admin question? ..?? Is there a place on Ning to report how you feel about the platform; Kind of like a "Click here to tell us what you think about our site" button?

I just had enough time to edit my reply... I sent a message via the "Report an Issue" button at the bottom of the page... We'll see soon if there is anything that can be done!

Patric, i'm with you on this. However...

We've done user testing on this in the past with other web projects, and a surprising number of people don't realize it when a 'target=blank' link opens a new browser window. Then, when they try to use the back button to get back to where they were, it can never take them all the way back to where, in their mind, they started. This is a more tech savvy crowd here, so maybe it wouldn't be an issue.

We share the same preference on this, but it's not the obvious usability choice that I once thought it was. I'm in the habit of Shift+clicking everything to spawn a new window on my own, so that is how I handle it (or Ctrl+click for a new tab).

Very interesting and shame on me for not thinking like a noobie! Guess I need to train myself to force the links to open in a new tab.

Oh, I also find that frustrating. So, I'm glad you asked. I'll be anxious to see the solution(s).

I believe you can also change the settings in some browsers to open new pages in a new window thereby saving your original page. But I'm not a techie and could be wrong.

On blog software like WordPress, or on a regular html editor, you can specify that links open in new windows and tabs. Blogger and Ning don't seem to have that capability. There is probably some code that you can add, although I would have to figure out what it is; Doug Karr can probably recite it in his sleep, if it's not already tattooed on his person somewhere.

If you have Firefox, then you have a couple other options: 1) If you have a mouse with a click-wheel, click that wheel on a link, and it will automatically open in a new tab UNDER your current tab. 2) Right-click the link, and then select Open New Tab or press the letter T.

OK, I'm a man with knowledge of many shortcuts but that use the click-wheel in Firefox tip was priceless! I had no idea you could do that. Thank you!

Ning has two networks available for these help issues. Ning Network Creators and Ning Network Developers. These may be the source for some answers.

Yes, I cheated and manually typed in the target=blank HTML for these links.

I was waiting for someone to hard code those target=blank attributes...

Here is a tip.

Use the middle scroller on your mouse to click links. Just hover over the link and press it down like you are clicking and it should open the link in a new tab. This works nearly regardless of the browser. Enjoy!
