I'm the real wordpress junkie... I'm running several Wordpress installs:

WPMU at http://blogs.ubcafe.org
AskAnythingSaturday TV
IndyChristianGeeks
and
My Personal Blog

I run our work blog with a WordPress plug-in on a Network Solutions server. I just started my wife's blog last night with WordPress' service. And a few days ago, I bought www.SubversiveConsumer.com and pointed it at a new WP blog about the importance of buying local, and thus subverting the large corporations.

My personal humor blog is at Blogger however. I like both services, and wish they could just combine some of their features. Right now, they each have a bit of what I want, so it makes it hard to pick just one.

Eric,

I like your subversive consumer concept. If you get a chance, e-mail me sometime and tell me your vision for this...knowledgemachine(at)hotmail(dot)com I'd like to talk to you about future possibilities for this.

I have several different blogs, all built on Wordpress platform.
http://www.roundpeg.biz/blog - This is primarily designed to support my core business, marketing tips for small biz owners. Add to my primary website the first of the year, it has dramatically increased traffic to my site, and would recommend every business owner add one.

http://www.indy-biz.com This is my oldest blog, primarily news about local small business, with the occasional comment or opinion thrown in. Originally built on a Blogger platform, i migrated the content with help from Doug Karr ( who is by the way a word press genius)

http://www.866mynubiz/blog Started with my friend Chuck Roach, this is tips for new biz owners. Most of the content is generated by other experts, and I simply share their content and ideas.

So, I like my blog at Wordpress, but how to I get my own site, without the wordpress.com being attached to it? Right now my wordpress blog is at http://mmorris.wordpress.com, I wish it was something like michellemorris.com.

I have never bought a website before, and I know my name is already taken. I checked godaddy.com, and found that MMorrisRealtor.com is available., which I like because my e-mail is MMorris, and my Carpenter site is MMorris. But I have no clue about what to do, how to make it look good, how to get my wordpress blog onto it, etc.

Well, thank you to Seth, then. I am a member of BzzAgent, and know about Squidoo from that, but hadn't started my own lens yet. I'm glad you pointed that out to me.

You'll need to buy the domain and web hosting. You can get that from pretty much any company, but you may want to research whichever company you choose before giving them any chunk of money, because not all of them are completely honest and straightforward. Most web hosting companies have a "Control Panel" that allows you to install software such as Wordpress onto your website, and make it easy for you to upgrade and such. I know for a fact that GoDaddy and Dreamhost do, and it is usually advertised on their website if they offer the feature. Then, after you get the site installed, you can upload themes and plugins and activate them within the web interface.

After you've used Wordpress for a while (the installed version) you'll get used to how everything works and it will be second nature. If you need help, let me know...

Thank you so much for your guidance. How much should I expect to spend on a basic page?

Reply to This

It depends on a few things, mostly depending on if you want to deal with a really good company (like Jumpline) or a cheap company that just works, but may be less reliable. Mostly depends on your budget, on the cheap end you should expect around $3-5 /month and on the high-end you should expect between $12-20.
