Making people and ideas findable

Does anyone know of a small local company not college, or university that offers beginning Mac classes? I'm currently trying to do our advertising, but not knowing Mac very well, I'm clueless, and have to fend for myself on Word 2007. Help!

From what I understand you can go into the Apple store at Keystone at the Crossing and take classes. I haven't confirmed the price myself but I was told it was $99 for a year of 1 hour a week classes.

Great suggestion! I'll call them tomorrow to see if they have anything less than 1 yr., I kind of need something that lasts like 4-6 weeks tops.

Here's your Mac education in three easy steps:

1) Don't use Word 2007.
2) Buy Adobe CreativeSuite 3.
3) Buy one of the Dummies guides for Adobe InDesign.

Okay, there's a little more to it than that, but InDesign is actually pretty easy to use. You might have a somewhat tough time finding an InDesign-only class, but the books that are available are very helpful. If you know Windows at all, you can use the Mac. That's because Microsoft stole their interface years ago.

You could also try Help My Mac on Washington, somewhere around the 5400 or 5500 block (it's in Irvington). I would guess they could help you. If not, buy someone from one of the Mac-based marketing agencies in town lunch, and have them give you a crash course.

If you're still in a pinch, buy ME lunch, and I'll give you a crash course in InDesign.

Thanks Erik, but I don't think my company will get new softwae for me, so I'll check out Help My Mac.

Deana,
I don't know exactly what all your looking for regarding Mac classes -- i.e. using the Mac-based software, or general operating system "stuff", but I highly recommend Bionic Cat. Stephen is a certified Apple Consultant that is awesome.

Thanks John, Bionic Cat is close to where I live, so that is convenient! Deana

Yeah Stephen is great, great, great. I've gone to his home office to work (I needed to tinker with Leopard Server) and he's come up to my house to do some work on an iMac that went astray. He knows his stuff, that's for sure (and is highly patient).

I mainly need to know how to use the Mac programs, like Quark, Photoshop, and Illustrator to layout ads and marketing materials. Is that something Stephen does?

Eh, I don't know to be honest. I've really just worked with him more on Mac operating system stuff. Give him a shout, he'll know better than I :)

To be honest Deana, those programs are the same on a Mac as they are on a Windows machine. I use -- *choke* -- Windows at work, and use Photoshop, InDesign (the Quark competitor), and Illustrator. So you can have someone who is not a Mac person show you how to use those.

There are even classes available on occasion, and they will give instructions on how to do things, and explain the keyboard commands for both operating systems. So I think you're better off finding a design teacher rather than a Mac teacher.

Deana:

I've trained users in Quark, Illustrator and Photoshop. (I was a Designer/Art director for many years, and still create all my own marketing materials for my Real Estate biz on my Mac.) It's been a few years, but I'd be glad to talk with you about consulting with you on that if you still need help.
