Making people and ideas findable

Does any have an issue with government taking away the right of choice for individual citizens? I can understand smoke free restaurants but I completely disagree with a smoke free ban much like California has. Smoke free in buildings? Fine by me.

I grew up with smokers, and am exceptionally sensitive to cigarette smoke. It catches in my lungs like sand. I think it's my right to not experience that feeling. Anywhere. ...There's nothing more obnoxious than riding down the Monon Trail on my bike and getting a big lungful of smoke. Or driving down the street and getting a dose thanks to the smoker in the car in front of me. Or "running the gauntlet" through "smokers' exile" 50 feet outside the entrance to the State Office Building.

It's MY outdoors, too. Please don't inflict your (not you, Kyle) smoke on me!

I'm not going to get into all the health and legal issues right now. They can be debated, as they have been in here, and discussed until we are blue in the face. Background, up bringing, moral and social issues, practices, etc all play apart in determining your view on smoking. Which side is right?

I live in Fort Wayne right now. The city went "smoke-free", in June. All restaurants, bars, business, public spaces are smoke-free. Going out to eat and not being covered in smoke afterwards is much more enjoyable in my opinion. I don't smoke so I realize my view is tainted. However, I do have several friends that do, and after initial complaints from them and the whole city they realized something; 9 months in, it isn't THAT MUCH DIFFERENT. Sure it is a little less convenient, but they still smoke and just as much. I think Indy will find out the same: It actually works out to be BETTER for both parties with little sacrifice.

Greg,
Glad to hear that you have enjoyed a smoke free Fort Wayne. Generally your experience is usually what happens after a law is introduced, there is a small period of adjustment but then people realize how nice it is to dine and go out to smoke free places. In the end it is easy for people to get in the habit of just going outside to smoke.

Hi everyone- great discussion! I joined this group because my home state, NJ, went smoke-free in bars and restaurants the day before Easter in 2006. My friends and I all went out to celebrate, and it was surreal. I think people can do whatever they like outside, but it's not fair to impact others without their consent. Violent drunks are kicked out of bars because they could harm others, smoke can do that as well. They can do what they want in their homes or outdoors, but shouldn't involve us in their bad decisions!

Now that I'm in IN, I hate that my clothes and hair smell like smoke when I get home from a bar or restaurant. I'd love to see Indianapolis go smoke free :)

It's a dilemma. I don't want Big Bro telling me what I can and can't do, but I don't want people dumping their trash in my yard either. Oh, I mean filling my air with cigarette smoke.

I'm pretty allergic to tobacco, and it "catches" in my lungs even driving down the street when the person in the car in front of me is smoking.

We humans do a lot of dumb things, and as long as they don't hurt someone else, what the heck. But smoking hurts me, so I'm against it.

Shall we talk about seatbelts and motorcycle helmets now??

We can only wish and imagine that Indiana could ever be so forward thinking for our hoosiers overall health. We will never get out of the top 5 five for smokers in the US w/o drastic measures. I hate to be like that but this state is NOT going to get or be healthy by its self. The state is full of fat/obese smokers! How can we make a change w/o making BIG changes?! Also the ban would help the youth, if they grow up far from it they are less likely to become unhealthy and smoke like so many in the this state.... BAN SMOKING period to your own property ! make a packa cost 10 bucks and have the extra money go to education!

There's a fine line between a wholesale ban on smoking, such as the California ban. But I think the government has the right to ban smoking in its buildings and other public places the government operates. National parks is a good example. And I think banning smoking should be left to business owners' discretion. I just posted about my experience at Nicky Blaine's. Unfortunately, I don't frequent NB's because of the smoky environment, no do I make it a habit of patronizing other businesses where smoking is permitted. If more non-smokers too that same stance, some owners may be persuaded to change their policy. There wouldn't have to be government regulation if people would get motivated and mobilized.
