Making people and ideas findable

this is a shot in the dark! Does anyone know how to get sponsers for fundraising events? What are the steps to take to approach this? What do I need to do to get to the companies? When is the best time to approach them with this? How do I get them to see that this foundation is important for raising a significant amount of money. Please advise! Thanks!

In my experience, you need to allow lots of time. Usually decisions are made by committees or bureaucracies that may only meet and/or consider new donation opportunities once a month, once a quarter, or possibly once a year (for something like a high-dollar title sponsorship).

Most large companies will post their giving guidelines on their Web sites. Carefully select companies that have a mission close to that of your nonprofit. Your best bet will be approaching people in that organization whom you already know and have good relationships. Let them present the foundation's need on your behalf. They will better know their company's politics and hierarchy.

Create sponsorship packages that tell the company in great detail what they will get out of the deal and attach a price tag. You can give them a choice of several sponsorship levels or tiers, but don't approach them with open-ended requests. Tell them what you want and wait for them to tell you if they need to make changes in order for it to work.

Hopefully that gets you started. Let me know if you have other questions. I've organized and secured sponsors for golf tournaments, races, award programs and more.

Agreed. When someone asks for a donation or sponsorship I want to know how much to who and what for along with a solid answer to what I am going to get in return. And time is very important when it comes to the big ticket sponsorships or donations. Some can be oked by the person in charge of taking in those types of requests, others have to be approved by upper management and or a board.

Excellent Advice!! Those were some things I haven't thought of . Thanks!

You can also shoot for regional offices of large corporations. For example, get in touch with one of the Coca-Cola distributor/bottlers in the area. They'll gladly sponsor something through cash or product donation in order to get the Coke name out there. You can do the same thing with franchises like Chick-fil-A or McDonalds.

To piggyback off what Mike said, you will also need to have a written proposal that is written almost as a business case -- what does the sponsor get, why is this issue important, who will it help, and how many people (i.e. customers) will see the sponsorship logo?

I think I've got it! That was also good advice, go to the regional offices of large corporations. I think I;ll give it a whirl. thanks!
