Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

If you had to perform 5-10 minutes of material at a comedy club, what would you talk about? Would you be mean or nice. Who would you poke fun at?

I would talk about people who don't take Smaller Indiana seriously. This is a place for professional development not some sort of "social networking." Plus speaking in front of people is hard work, it's not something to make jokes about.

Well that may be your opinion, Mike, but you just signed up yesterday.

Give it time.

In my experience, the "smoosiers" enjoy getting connected to people who are different than they are as much as people who share a lot of similarities. Good Luck!

I would be nicer, and do self-deprecating humor. I would do jokes about my experiences, the joys and tribulations of being a parent, and the funny things kids do.

I would also make fun of Republicans.

If I did it it would be the observational humor or telling funny stories from my childhood. As my kids get older, they are saying some brilliantly funny and witty things.

I would talk about the ups and downs of living with my father-in-law and his wacky antics.

I would focus on the nature of political ads, and ask the hard questions, like: Who, exactly, has ever used the term "good-paying jobs" in everyday language? I wake up, and say "Honey, I'm going out to look for a good-paying job today?" Politicians of both parties speak of wanting "better schools," "lower crime," and a "better future for our children" like these are stunning new concepts. Really, Mr. Lincoln, you actually WANT better schools? Wait, wait, wait, you said MORE jobs? That's just crazy talk.

I would vote for someone who ran on the premise of "You know, our schools are fine, crime is not a problem in my neighborhood, and screw the future, let's live for today!" Honestly, you know the minute they are elected, that's their view anyway. But it would be refreshing to see.

In the words of Barak Obama: "We need hope and change...because without hope, we cannot change, and without change, we cannot be hopful that the changes will give us hope. So, we can change and we can hope, and by hoping for change, we can hope the change will bring us hope will until the day we have changed because of hope (wait...or is it hope because of change?)

You should definitely consider comedy.

Definitely math humor.

There's just not enough math humor out there. Nothing funnier than math pickup lines:

"If I were a curve you'd be my asymptote - I always tend towards you."

Maybe not.

I guess it would only work if I had a crowd of drunk mathematicians and computer scientists. Now that I think of it, that would be funny enough. You don't really need a comedian when those guys get punchy.

I would describe my writing angst and bust my own insecure chops! People would be forced to see themselves in my hysteria. That, or they'd be forced to have me committed to the stress center. Either way, they'd get a kick out of it.
