Making people and ideas findable

I know we all have this need for order and categorization, but in my humble opionio, "Web 2.0" was passe a year ago).

If right now you are just thinking of starting a business or modeling a product using the 2.0 mantras, I fear you might be a little to late... Its now time to start exploring what 2.5 and 3.0 will be bringing.

So where do all of these little "SaaS", targeted micro applications and hordes of social websites lead us? How can we monetize on this madness that is somewhat reminiscent of the open source movement in the mid to late 90s.

The companies that look at the 2.0 ecosystem in the same way that VMWare did in the 90's, will be able to build a sustainable business model around supporting all of these small, functional and focused monthly billable services (i.e. BaseCamp, FormSpring, etc) for the larger Fortune 1000 corporations.

The Web's a big thing, and I would hate to see us reclassify it too often. It's still 2.0, but that's OK. 2.0, to me, means everything that is still happening right now. Which is a lot. But nothing that is completely changing the game. If Google disappears, and Apple's runs out of ideas, and blogs become irrelevant, , and I contact you by closing my eyes and imagining my response to you, and a bunch of new names take over the game...then we're 3.0.

Regardless of the version, there are a couple issues that transcend technology.

First of all, the concept of Web 2.0 is increased interactivity between website and user. This dynamic is important, but also very different between demographic categories. Younger people stay 'plugged in' to the latest changes and will demand constant innovation and evolution (2.5, 3.0. etc...) Older professionals appreciate interactivity, but also demand more ROI from their web investment (whether that is in development or time spent using the Internet). Change for change's sake will be less appealing to this group than younger ones. Older, retired people are using the Internet, but tend to be fearful of constant change. Many of these folks can't comprehend (and don't want to consider) jargon such as Web 2.0, microsites, etc.

All three groups come to the Internet for information and to stay connected with important groups. All will benefit from the tenets of Web 2.0 (or whatever it is called). Each group must be approached with change differently however.

The next issue is valuable content. Games are fun, jokes are always viral, but businesses are looking for return on investment. In my opinion, good content will drive revenues. Innovators who can deliver, manage, or license content will be successful. Content drives traffic and traffic drives revenue. I think this is the least common denominator for e-business (how 90's does that sound?)

The final key element is constant change. The demographics discussed earlier will change as younger groups grow older. Despite our age, we tend to value the things we grew up with (if not, why would there be sooooo many classic rock stations out there today?). As the Internet generation moves into business and business management, Internet innovation and change will become more common. At the same time, a new young generation will push them with the evolving technology of the day.

Bottom line, keep you eye on the immediate future, deliver solid content, and know your audience and you'll be successful. I think this formula will be as valid at Web 10.5 as it was at Web 1.0.
