Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Here's an idea I'd like to float out there. What do other members of this group think about having a group show or exhibit/expo of the work/works of members of the group?
Outside of providing an opportunity for members of the group to meet and mingle, it could also provide an outlet for the Indy community to at large to get an idea of what we, as individuals, do.
Any thoughts?

Wanda - all great questions. And you're not being a pain.

Elegant Funk is an art show put on by members of SI done in conjunction with IDADA's 1st Friday Gallery walks. I think the group would agree that we decided to name it to highlight that the specialness of the event. As you will see, we're working on some cool things for it. It won't be a typical gallery show.

I'll have copies of the info and application package on Wednesday which will go into detail on the submission and selection process. Our hope is to allow every artist to have at least one piece. More if space allows. Wug's landlord is allowing us to use some of the vacant space in the HUGE industrial building - it is broken up into lots of units. One of our hurdles is to prepare the space - primarily painting and lighting. We're working on the lighting which will be a topic of discussion.

When we got this going, we decided to hold regular meeting as we figured there would be a lot of work - publicity, application process, fixing up the space, working with food vendors and possibly musicians, etc. Based on the responses we have received in the several days since this went public, it looks like we made the right decision.

That's it in a nutshell. Feel free to ask more questions.

Thank you! What a neat concept you all have here...Okay my only question I think at this point, is do all of the artists come to your weekly meetings, or do you have a committee doing that

Thanks for your patience!

The meetings are with 5 - 8 of us who are the "organizing committee".
UPDATE

this show is gonna be so good.
i'm really looking forward to it.

the entries we've received cover the depth and breadth of indiana art, including media and subject matter. it looks like everyone has something to say and contribute with their expressions. from the efolk garage band, thank you to all for your responses.

the applications will be going out this week.
we will begin distributing promotional materials (posters, postcards, business cards) and p.r. very shortly.
food and drink are pretty much set in place.
we'll be contacting sponsors very soon, although sponsors, feel free to continue contacting us at elegantfunk@att.net. this will be an excellent opportunity to present your company/organization to a sophisticated and energetic demographic.
we'll be asking for volunteers to help fix up space the end of june.
the efolk garage band cmmttee will be meeting weekly from june 11 on.
everything is rolling along smoothly in its funkily elegant way.

BIG thanks to andy and nancy for their organizational paperwork efforts. we wouldn't be this far without you. pam fraizer of fraiserdesigns.org is responsible for the wonderfully crazy, funky graphix.

andy, didn't mean to bump your reply to wanda. didn't see a "reply to this' on your message.
Hi Andy & Wug - Your work on this has been great - I'm very excited for the event. I haven't received information or an application package to enter work in the show. I also just realized that my email notifications were turned off (oops!) What is the best way to ensure that everyone in CC:AD has an opportunity to enter work? Is it possible to link the application on the elegant funk event page? Perhaps an announcement on the CC:AD comment wall would be helpful. As the CC:AD administrator, I would be happy to send a message to the group connecting everyone to the application and event.

Thanks!

Good Morning Craig,
We sent out a notice several weeks ago asking people to send a note to elegantfunk@att.net if they were interested in being in the show. Apps and info went out last week and are due back towards the end of this month. I'd prefer people to send an email to our address box rather than posting the package on SI. This way we can get their email addresses and follow up with them.

So, send us a note and I'll get you da stuff. And feel free to send a note to the community. Pat posted a blog about it on the SI front page in May. I don't have the link to it but it's probably somewhere on the site. I'd try to find it but then I'd lose what I've just written and I need to go into a meeting in a few minutes.

thanks!
Andy

Hello all,
I just joined the group yesterday. This event sounds great, I would be interested in being involved. I am going to try to attend the meeting tomorrow to get more info.
Thanks, Jason

Any chance this late newcomer (just joined) could get into the show? I'm quite excited about this group!

hi jason and earlynn,
welcome to smaller indiana and creative commerce. it's always good to have new , creative people along. as far as the show goes, i'm sorry, but the submission date passed a couple of weeks ago. you may have heard that we're still accepting applications. this is true only for those who rsvp'd by may 31. we've extended the app deadline for those who rsvp'd only because there was a mix-up with my new postal carrier and the proper p.o. box. some peoples app's got returned to them.
but don't give up hope. there's already been a lot of talk about doing elegant funk II.

I also had wanted to apply but have been busy applying for the Indiana Aritsans Project, as it really sounds interesting. Will there be a date emailed or messaged out if you decide to do a second show?

Reply to This

hi keith, long time no see. how ya doin'? we'll be e-mailing and posting again for efunk II. we don't know how soon that will be, (since we haven't finished this one yet) but it sounds like it'll be at least yearly.
wanda, you rsvp'd, so if you can e-mail the app in before midnight tomorrow, you're cool. glad to hear you got your app in for the indiana artisans project. that sounds like a good project for the whole state.
