What are you doing on RACE DAY?

Many locals will be heading to the track. We'd love to hear about your Indy 500 traditions...and we'd like to see photos!! Post 'em here.

Others will be spending time working on their gardens, tans and BBQs...we want those stories too!!

I'm up in my old hometown of Syracuse, IN right now (home of Lake Wawasee), which means I can actually watch the race on TV. However, I never watch the race, I only listen to it on the radio. So I will probably sit outsideand fish, and listen to the race.

My Mother still refers to it as May 30th!

Steve, my in-laws and Cameron go to the race. Afterward, they come home tired and hungry - so I do a sort of smallish cookout for them and a few other friends.

Earlier in the day my daughter and I go to a movie and then pick out plants for the garden.

I used to go to the race but gave it up because I wasn't all that keen on being around that many people. I do miss the people watching. That was good stuff.

Actual Memorial Day...I'll probably work.

Race day in Indy...Sunny and warm, my favorite place to be as at the track.

And today was a perfect race day. warm, but not too hot, good race, exciting finish, and I had Scott Dixon in the driver pool, so it was profitable as well.

My 8-year-old Charlie (photo below) had a soccer tournament in Carmel Sat. and Sun. Our team, Indy Burn went 0-4 and my son played well but was hit in the nuts by the ball twice, and kicked in the face once. He was a walking America's Funniest Home Video episode.

Also celebrated sis-in-laws 30th today, but kept in touch with the race on 1070 and www.espn.com.

here's Charlie in action:

Started two new family 500 traditions over the weekend...

My wife Debbie and I have been 500 Festival Parade volunteer marshals for five years, helping direct traffic on the parade route. This year, I was one of the the first group of marshals mounted on Segways, and it was a gas! Perfect day... terrific parade... great volunteer group... and there's no better seat for the parade than a Segway, unless you're in one of the pace cars. Shot some behind-the-scenes video from the Segway platform, and I'll post some stills or short clips if you'd like to see them.

Debbie and I are also mentors at New Tech High @ Arsenal Tech. She was one of a small group of New Tech High students, parents and mentors that ran a volunteer food concession booth at the track yesterday to earn money for a student trip to Europe. They met at Arsenal Tech about 4AM, and worked nonstop from the time the gates opened at 6AM until they closed twelve hours later. The stories she told me me last night were so good, I've asked her to sign up as a Smoosier (when she recovers) and share them.

It was no glass of milk, but my friend, Chad, won our 1st annual Half & Half 500 by drawing Scott Dixon in our pre-race festivities.

Every year, it is a large family thing. Radios in every room, non-stop grilling, and conversation. Later, we watch the race and are often surprised at how much we misinterpreted the radio announcer.
