Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I was just reading about this great idea out of San Fran called carrot mob. The sole purpose of their group is to reward businesses for making a commitment to environmentally-friendly business practices.

The idea is simple: as a group, we only shop at stores committed to using a percentage of revenue from our members on environmentally-friendly things like switching to CFL lightbulbs, updating HVAC equipment, etc. Think of it as "Green group buying".

I really like this idea, and I think even a few dozen committed people can make this happen. Anyone else willing to give it a go? If I can get at least a dozen Indy-area people to make a firm commitment, I'm willing to lay the groundwork.

I just joined the Smaller Indiana community this week and am excited to see the promising exchange of ideas taking place in the Greener Indiana group. The concept of an Indiana-based Carrot Mob or similar type of network is something I have been attempting to organize in the Geist area to address water quality issues. I've already done a little research about watershed-friendly companies and will post the results in the very near future.

I must admit that I've found it difficult to enlist others to participate in the process of identifying 'green' companies, products and services. The majority of respondents to my public outreach efforts have been from individuals engaging in 'greenwash' for their firms. However, I have found a number of companies in the Fishers/Geist area that are truly focused on more environmentally sustainable practices.

That's awesome! Ditto what Erik said.

Great Idea. I work for a company that specializes in Teleworking solutions and the promotion and use of teleworking as an economically and environmentally sound way of helping out the environment, employees while saving (the company) money at the same time. We have been working with the government some and inidividual businesses but it seems that, even though the rewards are great for small and large companies alike, there seems to be a wall in getting the initiatives off the ground.

I think it's the old-school mind set that, "If I can't see you you must not be working". Even though there are many studies showing that productivity increases as a result of working from a home-office in most cases and attrition is greatly reduced (not to mention the lowering of carbon emissions and fuel consumption) this still seems to be considered a "last resort". This is why it is so difficult to identify "green" companies. What they (Corporations) are not understanding is that there a far greater benefits to them than any individual or environmental group. But, if we could get just 1/10th of the companies out there to put an initiative in place allowing teleworking (even 1-2 days a week) it would make all the difference in the world. I am hoping that with individual initiatives such as carrot mob and others like this, we can start to move to a more environmentally responsible corporate and inidividual America.

For more information on the benefits of Teleworking you can go to
