Making people and ideas findable

Hi!

We're just a few weeks away from the first-ever Drum Corps International World Championships here in Indiana. There are still really cool volunteer opportunities available during the events, Aug. 6 – 9 and we need your help spreading the word.

There are lots of options -- for a couple of hours or a day; work in Indianapolis or Bloomington; inside or outside; meeting people or getting a workout, there is a volunteer spot. Please share this info with family, friends or anyone else you think might be interested too. More details are below. Register at www.dci.org/volunteer.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Wednesday, August 6
o Indianapolis – DCI Promotional Booth at Indiana State Fair
o Indianapolis – Individual and Ensemble Competition Events (Convention Center)
o Corps member and equipment drop off area
o Event set up
o Welcome booth set up and operation
o Room monitors
o Judges set up and score sheet runners

Don’t sit back and let others have all the fun! Remember – volunteering is a great way to see the greatest spectacle in marching music absolutely free, get a cool t-shirt and meet new people! Bring your friends and enjoy the events!

Did You Know?
• Each corps travels all season with:
o A truck housing a kitchen – from which they cook 4 meals a day!
o 2 - equipment trucks
o 4 - 55 passenger coaches
o 30 instructional volunteers
o 20 volunteers who drive, cook, sew uniforms and repair instruments
o Talent, enthusiasm, drive and an incredible commitment to excellence!

The Countdown – Get on the Bus!
DCI is offering free, round-trip, non-stop service from downtown Indianapolis to Memorial Stadium on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the World Championships. While most drum corps buses will log over 10,000 miles on the road to Bloomington this summer, it's just a scant 55 from the center of Circle City. All that we need from you for this Championship journey is your shuttle reservation!
You can go to www.dci.org/volunteer and follow the links, or paste https://2008dcishuttle.theregistrationsystem.com/en/registration/in..., into your browser to book seats. Then just print out your reservation and bring a photo ID, and you’re ready to ride!

Know the Score – Time for Training
Make sure that you attend one of two mandatory volunteer orientation sessions. You choose the date and location that works best for you. Make your selection when you register to volunteer.

• Tuesday, August 5 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Westin Hotel in Indianapolis
• Wednesday, August 6 from 7:30-9 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington

Volunteer Spotlight – Corps Members Model the Way!
As flood waters rose in Baraboo Wisconsin on June 12, the Madison Scouts rose to the occasion and helped the community that’s been host to their pre-season rehearsals. The Scouts put down their horns and drums and picked up sandbags, uniting to help save the homes of local residents from the swelling
“The members approached me about helping the community with the flooding,” said corps director Dann Peterson. “After some consideration about the issues involved, we set out to assist the Baraboo community. We are Madison Scouts…that’s what we do.” The corps was deployed as a group and worked diligently until close to 1 a.m. to help build sand bag walls in order to protect homes in the nearby area. “It was an incredible site,” said Pepper Wooters, cymbal instructor and participant in the evening’s events. “The guys worked their butts off, standing in 2 feet of water and filthy from head to toe. They would be singing their show parts in unison, it was almost a mini-rehearsal. It was touching to hear them sing May You Never Walk Alone while helping out in this way.”
Don’t let these tremendous young leaders down! Register online today to play your part in the DCI World Championships!
