Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I am in process of writing a sales/marketing letter for Global Access Point, we are a data center/colocation/carrier hotel located in South Bend, IN. I am putting together a letter for the Chicago/Indianapolis market as to why get out of the 'big city' and get more cost effective machine space and power cost than the bigger cities.

Any thoughts on eye catching letters that you have seen work or may have written? Or any suggestions, comments, recommendations?

Hey Ryan,

That's a good question. Here is a brainstorming thought:

Why did you choose to write a sales/marketing letter?

Ryan,

Focus on one or two main points, and jump right in. Don't flower it up with a lot of introduction. Monetize the benefits -- you can save $X per month if you colocate in South Bend -- and put that in the first paragraph. Use short sentences. Sort of like I've done here.

You can also do bullet points for some of the smaller benefits. Sort of a point-counterpoint, showing why South Bend is the better choice. (Of course, you'll get some disagreement from our SMIN data center people who live here in Indy, but I'm all for sticking it to Chi-town!. ;-) ) But don't do a big data dump of information in the letter. Just pick the one big benefit that people will get for picking your company, and beat that drum over and over. Save the rest of the information for when you actually get your sales meetings.

If you want, contact me directly, and I'll be happy to look your letter over. I've written hundreds, if not thousands, of sales letters in the past 14 years. Just message me directly. I'll give you my email address, and we can get started. (I don't know if there is a protocol to putting our email addresses in these messages or not.)

I would like to get a run down of what people think when it pertains to the "art of the sales letter." In my opinion the sales letter is a dying sales vehicle. Thoughts?
