A sense of humor. If I can't laugh at what I'm doing, or the absurdities of life, I'd be the guy you read about in the paper the next day -- "He was really quiet, kept to himself a lot. We were all surprised by what happened."
What are you working on?
My very first humorous novel (I'm on Chapter 5 now!), my weekly humor column, and building my freelance writing career. Oh yeah, I have a day job and a family too.

War of the Toothpastes

Every new marriage starts with some rocky issues that, at least to outsiders, seem impossible to work past. The newlyweds have different ideas about politics, raising children, or money. It’s especially hard for couples who come from completely different religions. He’s Catholic, she’s Jewish. He goes to church on Sunday, she goes to Temple on Saturday. “You can’t marry someone outside the faith!” says the young man’s mother. “There will be too many problems.” “We love each other enough to ge… Continue

W. Virginia Man Charged with Passing Gas

As a typical Guy, I've complained loudly about the deadliness of another Guy's gas. Or joked about whether he would have to register an impact statement with the Environmental Protection Agency. Whether his butt should be registered as a lethal weapon. Whether the smeller is truly the feller. About whether – you get the picture. What we never realized is that passing gas can be bad enough you can be charged with criminal batt… Continue

Politics Makes Loud Bedfellows

This week's Laughing Stalk column originally started out as a blog post on Smaller Indiana. I liked it so much, I wanted to share it with the more than 12 people who read the things I post (Wait, what?). So if you missed it the first time, check out this week's Laughing Stalk blog entry. A conversation with a friend this week got me to thinking about politics. Specifically, why do people turn in… Continue

Political Advocates or A-holes?

A small conversation with a friend this morning got me to thinking, why do people get the most upset about politics and religion? We rant and rave and scream and get purple in the face about the two things we have absolutely no control over. We will argue with friends, family, and strangers about our point of view, and want to commit cartoon levels of violence if someone doesn’t agree with us. Yet we don’t get that passionate about our work or our families. “Hey, my kid is smarter than your kid… Continue

The Good Scissors: Bane of Childhood

Don't use the Good Scissors! Anyone with a mother grew up hearing that. Every household had a pair of Good Scissors, and they were not to be touched. Not by children. Not by anyone under 18, in fact. Basically, not by anyone who wasn't your mother. The Good Scissors were so good that they – and anything related to them – were Capitalized. The Good Scissors weren't just any crapp… Continue
