Pray the Devil Back to Hell

Pray the Devil Back to Hell As I left the theater, I saw quite a bit of blood splattered near the escalator with 2 security personnel standing guard. I was already thinking about how the glassed-over eyes and hardened faces of the gun-toting boy soldiers in Liberia reminded me too much of gang-involved youth I have known in Indianapolis and Los Angeles. And now there was real blood on the doorstep of the theater (turns out it was an accident someone had, not a result of violence). Not that I fe… Continue

Alan...I saw your request for a local athlete....are you forgetting that Sherry is buddies w/ Greg Oden & Mike Conley? I didnt want to post this on the blog b/c I have no idea how likely they would be to show up, but she sees Oden at LN all the time, he is still rehabbing here in town, you should contact her, maybe she can hook you up

It would have to be peak moments - where I feel I am in the right place at the right moment to notice with someone else that the earthy and the divine are a whole. And this seems to happen routinely in my work with disadvantaged youth. It's mostly about helping young people see that their frustrations with life are perfectly reasonable given their circumstances and that the antidote is not snatching up more things or engaging in ever grander distractions - efforts that will just make them feel even more disenfranchised - but to respect them and make a connection. So helping someone with a load of produce, cooking a new recipe, helping worms turn trash into fertilizer, participating in creation by growing food - these things are both practical and healing. If creativity is making something from nothing, and humor is making nothing of something, then a sense of humor and the ability to create are ways to move beyond the limited horizon of poverty. (Such the rambling philosopher I am.) Anyway, that's a start.

What a great question, Alan! I think what keeps me going, what gives me energy, is seeing people's eyes light up with delight. And given what I do, most often that's matching the right person with just the right bike. Guess I'm just a matchmaker at heart. I get the same high from connecting people with each other - or with God - or with their own dream, passion, purpose.

WHAT ABOUT YOU? What keeps YOU going, makes your heart sing?

No, I didn't make it to the Youth Worker Cafe, either. Too bad, because Dennis said it was about networking. I had a bug yesterday, though, and wasn't sure whether or not I was over it. I was, but also had a crazy-busy day!

Unfortunately, we haven't seen Malik, Alan. I went and picked him up once, because he had a flat tire on his bike, but he hasn't been back. He said his bike got stolen. I told him if he'd get a bus, I'd see what I could do (which everyone who knows me knows means, "We'll get you something; maybe not a Cadillac, but something that will keep you rolling." Still haven't seen him again.

Matthew Jose was in today, from the Purdue extension, to buy a bike to go along with a trailer we're building him. Do you know him?

Hi, Alan!
Maybe this is a good way to keep in touch about what we're both doing. Had dinner with Andy and Jan York last Saturday. They had a ball working with your group!
