Indiana Recycling 19th Anniversary Celebration this Friday

This Friday is the first Friday of the month and that means that the Indiana Humanities Council is opening its doors to the public (truth be told, since we work here, we’re kind of open all the time during business hours–but these Open Houses are much more official and traditionally come with cheese and wine…and [...]

Philanthropy and the Economic Crisis

One of my favorite topics as Hoosierati blogger is explaining exactly what the humanities are, or rather explaining why it’s so difficult to explain what they are. Chief among obstacles is the lofty metaphysicality of the humanities that makes them seem like the province of the elite.+ It is much easier to explain what an agriculturalist [...]

Master the Technology and Share the Cookies

Our resource partners at Buddy2 have helpfully passed along the Indiana Department of Education’s K-8 Technology Skill Benchmarks. If you have a kindergartner at home, it’s time to make sure your young person can “identify digital tools by name” - scanner, cell phone, MP3 player, etc. Your 2nd grader should be able to “cite sources [...]

A Note for the Hoosier History Live! Blogger

Hello I am Heather Kaufman-McKivigan, the webmaster for Hoosier History Live! who also will be blogging at Hooserati for HHL! A little bit about myself. I received an M.A. in Sociology from Indiana University Purdue University - Indianapolis and  am currently working for the Frederick Douglass Papers at the Institute for American Thought. I’m also a co-editor [...]

Our Land: Contemporary Art from the Arctic at the Eiteljorg

Back in September the Indiana Humanities Council made the final round of grand awards for 2008 (Don’t worry, 2009 is just around the corner and more grants are on their way. Start your application early.) Humanities Initiative Grants are awarded on a competitive basis three times per year and are judged on a variety characteristics. [...]

Why join Smaller Indiana? What are you hoping to experience here ?
Most social networking sites are basically shams when it comes to ... ahem ... social networking. The virtual space is overflowing with partyers planning parties, sending animated "comments" to each other and collecting "friends." That's fine in its place. SmallerIndiana.com seems dedicated to becoming a legitimate means to helping people find other people to develop worthwhile professional connections.

Some Babble on the Babbling Banshee

Like with my review of Good Grief, Sidney there were bits to like and bits not to like in The Babbling Banshee. I like to get the bits not to like out of the way first because they're not worth dwelling on. The IndyFringe site warns that this play contains some Irish slang. It's not the slang that's the problem, it's the Irish br… Continue

Tastes Funny

Initially my plan was to enjoy the outdoors between my viewings of Good Grief, Sidney and The Babbling Banshee unfortunately it was blisteringly hot outside and if I had lingered too long I would have been compelled to spend the day in blissful hedonism at The Old Point--by which I mean partaking of the drink Ben Franklin thought was "proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." I am… Continue

Good Grief, Sidney--A Solid Effort All 'Round

The premise of Good Grief, Sidney is simple: Walter's wife has died and in order to come to terms with his grief he has written a play. The antagonist in the play is Sidney, Walter's atavistic other self. Walter feels he owes it to himself and to his wife to remain the aggrieved widower; Sidney however, wants to get laid. He's not so much an alter-ego as an alter-id. The actor playing Walter was nervous and awkward, two attribut… Continue

The Best of the Blizzard at the Phoenix Basile Theatre

Sitting in the front and center-most table at the Phoenix Basile Theatre for last night's viewing of The Best of the Blizzard there is no way I could have live-blogged the show for the Indy Fringe Festival/Smaller Indiana crossover even if I'd remembered to bring the lappy, which I didn't. I also didn't bring… Continue
