Why join Smaller Indiana? What are you hoping to experience here ?
For the last year or so, I've been trying to think of ways to give back to Indiana somehow. This is not easy to do since I don't physically live there. From what I can tell, the folks in this virtual community share my values and interests, and maybe the conversations I have here will help me figure out how to link my writing, my work, my interests, and my life in a more meaningful way.

Breaking Away...Hoosiers...and LITTLE BIG TOP

If you live within driving distance of Peru, Indiana or Hammond, Indiana, make it a point to go see LITTLE BIG TOP, an independent movie by Indiana native Ward Roberts. Playing in Peru at the Kerasotes Theater from Aug. 29-Sept. 4 at 7 and 9:40 PM. Playing in Hammond at the… Continue

"SAVE PERU"

I worry a lot about my hometown. Peru, Indiana sits 60 miles north of Indianapolis, straight up from Monument Circle on highway 31. It’s a hamlet too far from Indianapolis to be an exurb, and its economy is foundering. Non-service jobs are scarce, and forty percent of the people w… Continue

The Katie Couric Effect

I blog on Amazon.com from time to time, and I thought this recent post might interest members of SI.

Back in 1998, Katie Couric lost her husband to colorectal cancer. Out of this experience, she became a staunch supporter of colorectal cancer awareness, her most visible form of advocacy… Continue

Virtual vs. Actual Reality

I’m in Chicago, visiting my friends Abby and Bobby, a married couple. I’m checking my Facebook account, my Smaller Indiana account, and Abby and Bobby are wildly curious. “What is this?” they ask. “Why do you do this?” I think for a minute. “I noticed you guys check in with each other during the day. This is how I check in with the world. It’s like my water cooler.” Question: if I didn’t have these virtual communities, would I make a phone call instead? Or walk to a friend’s house for a quick… Continue

I live in Pittsburgh, yes, but I am a Hoosier

I thought I might say a few words about what brought me to Smaller Indiana. I’m a Hoosier native. I’m a writer (both my books are about Indiana) and a college professor. My academic teaching career has taken me all over the United States: Alabama, Minnesota, Baltimore, New Jersey, and now Pittsburgh, which (believe it or not) was as close as I could get to home. I often joke with my

So, I don't suppose there's much chance in you helping me to learn to ride a unicycle? Got one hanging in the garage.

Cathy: I heard you interviewed on Art of the Matter on WFYI a few weeks ago. I ended up sitting in the parking lot of Marsh for about 5 minutes to hear the end of the interview. I have Comeback Season on my list of books to buy. Glad to see that you're active here.
